Guidance on genetic testing and insurance

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) have recently updated their consumer guide on the code for genetic testing and insurance.

The Code on Genetic Testing and Insurance

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the Government have an agreement known as the ‘Code on Genetic Testing and Insurance’. This explains what insurance companies can and can’t do relating to genetic testing when people apply for insurance.

The code was first published in 2018 with a commitment to review the code every three years. The latest review of the code happened in December 2022. One of the findings of the review was the need for a more user friendly consumer guide to sit alongside the code which is what the ABI have now published.

Consumer guide for the code on genetic testing and insurance

The recently published consumer guide is a document that helps explain the code on genetic testing and insurance. It now includes a series of examples and FAQs to clarify what the code means for individuals who have had a genetic test and are applying for certain types of insurance.

We are pleased that Genetic Alliance UK were given the opportunity to feed into the development of this consumer guide and we look forward to engaging further with the ABI and Government to ensure that the voices of those living with genetic conditions are considered in any future developments.
