We are delighted to announce that the Board of Genetic Alliance UK has elected Elizabeth (Liz) Porterfield as its new Chairman. Liz takes over from Professor Rafael Yáñez, who has stepped down to focus on his professional commitments. Liz, former Deputy Chair, is retired from her strategic planning and policy role with the Scottish Government Health & Social Care Directorates where she led the development of several clinical strategies including the Scottish Rare Disease Plan.
‘I would like to recognise the valuable contribution made by my predecessor, Rafael and wish him all the very best for his future endeavours. I am honoured to have been elected by my Board colleagues to take on the mantle of Chair as Rafael’s successor. These are extremely challenging times for people affected by genetic, rare and undiagnosed conditions. The voluntary organisations and charities who work with and on behalf of the rare disease community face significant challenges also. I am delighted to have been elected Chair of our national alliance and am committed to the strong partnership working that is vital during these difficult times.’
