Thank you for considering leaving a gift to Genetic Alliance UK

When you choose to leave a gift in your Will, you guarantee that our work to improve the lives of 3.5 million people in the UK  living with genetic, rare and undiagnosed conditions continues beyond a single lifetime.

Leaving a gift in your Will tells the people you leave behind about who you were and what you believed in, and provides you with an opportunity to make a real difference. It is more than a single important financial contribution. It’s a lasting statement that gives hope for the future to people living with rare, genetic, and undiagnosed conditions and their families.

How do I leave a gift in my Will?

You may wish to write or amend your Will to commemorate life events, such as getting married, having a baby or celebrating a special birthday. After you have made sure your loved ones are cared for, including a gift in your Will to Genetic Alliance UK is straightforward, but should always be done in discussion with a qualified solicitor or Will service. This makes sure that all of the legal aspects of your Will are covered.

To make the process as smooth as possible, we’ve partnered with trusted online Will provider Kwil. It only takes around 15-30 minutes to complete a basic Will. Thanks to our partnership with Kwil, it’s also free of charge to you. If you benefit from using Kwil’s services, you might consider a small gift for Genetic Alliance UK in your Will.

Kwil has a dedicated helpline and online support available if you need any guidance.

What do I need to include in my Will?

The most important information to include is:

  • Genetic Alliance UK’s full name, address and registered charity number
  • What you want to leave us
  • How you’d like your gift to be used by the charity

Our suggested wording to leave a gift to Genetic Alliance UK:

“I give to Genetic Alliance UK, of Creative Works, 7 Blackhorse Lane, London E17 6DS, Registered charity number 1114195 (England & Wales) SC039299 (Scotland), [WHAT YOU WANT TO LEAVE US], to be used for general charitable purposes absolutely and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge.”

Different types of gifts in a Will

There are several ways that you can support Genetic Alliance UK in your Will. The most common ones are listed here.

All savings, assets and property are known as a person’s ‘estate’. Some people choose to leave us a specific percentage of their estate. This is called a ‘residuary gift’. The percentage given as a residuary gift is different for everyone, from 1% to even a majority proportion of well over 50%.

One of the benefits of a leaving a percentage of your estate is that, although the size of your estate may fluctuate throughout your lifetime, you can be confident knowing how your estate will be shared with your family, friends and/or the charities you support.

You might want to leave a fixed amount of money (also known as a ‘pecuniary gift’) to Genetic Alliance UK, leaving you in the knowledge that the amount you give will stay static and contribute towards improving the lives of everyone in the genetic, rare and undiagnosed community.

The benefit of this is that you know exactly how much you’ll be giving to us.

Rather than commit to a percentage of your estate or a fixed sum, you might want to leave us a specific item or asset that will be sold. We’re then given the proceedings from the sale.

Items you might choose to leave to us include things like paintings, jewellery or antiques. Assets may include the sale of a property, stocks or other savings.

The majority of people who leave a gift to Genetic Alliance UK in their Will do so without any restrictions on how their donation will be used. This allows us to ensure that it’s put to use across all of our vital services and projects, as well as where it is needed most.

However, if you or a family member has received direct support from us, you may prefer that your gift is used in a specific area of our work. If you’d like your legacy gift to support either SWAN UK or Rare Disease UK, or something else, please contact [email protected] to confirm the wording.
